Licorice (Gan Cao)

Licorice is incompatible/ xiang fan with the following herbs and may cause adverse or toxic reaction in the body.

  • gan sui (Radix euphorbiae kansui)
  • hai zao (Sargassum)
  • hong da ji (Radix knoxiae)
  • jing da ji (Radix euphorbiae pekinensis)
  • yuan hua (Flos genkwa)

Aconite (Fu zi, Chuan Wu, and Cao Wu)

Aconite fu zi (Radix Lateralis Praeparatus Aconiti ),  Chuan Wu (Prepared Sichuan Aconite), and Cao Wu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparata) are incompatible/ xiang fan with the following herbs and may cause adverse or toxic reaction in the body.

  • bai ji (Rhizoma bletillae)
  • bai lian (Radix ampelopsis)
  • ban xia (Rhizoma pinelliae)
  • chuan bei mu (Bulbus fritillariae cirrhosae)
  • gua lou pi (Pericarpium trichosanthis)
  • gua lou ren (Semen trichosanthis)
  • gua lou shi (Fructus trichosanthis)
  • tian hua fen (Radix trichosanthis)
  • zhe bei mu (Bulbus fritillariae thunbergii)

Veratrum (Li Lu)

Veratrum is incompatible/ xiang fan with the following herbs and may cause adverse or toxic reaction in the body.

  • bei sha shen (Radix glehniae);
  • bell Flower, dang shen (Radix codonopsis);
  • chi shao (Radix paeoniae rubrae)
  • dan shen (Radix salviae miltiorrhizae)
  • ginseng, ren shen (Radix ginseng);
  • nan sha shen (Radix adenophorae);
  • xuan shen (Radix scrophulariae);
  • ku shen gen (Radix sophorae flavescentis);
  • white Peony Root, bai shao (Radix paeoniae alba);
  • xi xin (Herba asari)

Counteractions / Xiang Wei

AKA Xiang Sha.  The following combination of herb pairs in a formula will reduce the action/usefulness/side effects of each herb.

  • liu huang (Sulfur po xiao (Sal glauberis)
  • shui yin (Hydrargyrum) + pi shuang (Arsenolite)
  • lang du (Radix euphorbiae fischerianae+ mi tuo seng (Lithargyrum)
  • ba dou (Fructus crotonis) + qian niu zi (Semen pharbitidis)
  • ding xiang (Flos caryophylli) + yu jin (Radix curcumae)
  • ya xiao (Nitrum san leng (Rhizoma sparganii)
  • xi jiao (Cornu rhinoceri) + cao wu (Radix aconiti kusnezoffii)
  • xi jiao (Cornu rhinoceri)  chuan wu (Radix aconiti preparata)
  • ren shen (Radix ginseng) + wu ling zhi (Excrementum trogopteri seu pteromi)
  • rou gui (Cortex cinnamomi+ chi shi shi (Halloysitum rubrum)
